The café and coffeehouse culture in France at the end of the 19th Century played a significant role in the development of Impressionism. Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Edouard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and

other artists met at cafés such as Le Divan Lepelltier, Le Brasserie Andler, and Café Guerbois to discuss, debate, and ultimately revolutionize modern art.

Cafés, coffeehouses, and brasseries were common subject matters for many of the Post-Impressionist artists, including Georges Seurat, Paul Signac, and Vincent van Gogh.  By depicting the emerging café culture, these artists were portraying symbols of modern life.  When van Gogh’s

iconic work, Café Terrace at Night, was first exhibited, its original title was Coffeehouse, in the Evening.

AMERICAN REALISM BLEND

The all-night coffee shop featured in Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks, masterwork of American Realism, does not depict an actual establishment.  Rather, it represents an amalgamation of real-life places and locations that Hopper likely encountered while living in New York City’s Greenwich Village during the time, coupled with the artist’s own imagination.

Recognizing that young artists of the Harlem Renaissance needed a place to meet and discuss their craft, African-American businesswoman and arts patron, A'Lelia Walker, opened the “Black Tower” on the second floor of her townhouse in Harlem in 1927.  As Walker described it, the “Black Tower” was intended as a sympathetic, comfortable, and informal place for artists, musicians, and writers to come “for a chat and a glass of lemonade, coffee or tea.”

At the dawn of the 20th Century, Vienna was home to more than 600 coffeehouses.  Many famous intellectuals, scientists, politicians, and artists of the day, including Sigmund Freud, Karl Kraus, Arthur Schnitzler, and Leon Trotsky, were frequent patrons of the coffeehouse (Kaffeehaus). One of the favorite destinations of leading Symbolist artist, Gustav Klimt, was Café Central, located in the heart of the city.
